Ng Yuhong is a composer and keyboardist based in Los Angeles, CA. Schooled and trained in Singapore, Yuhong performed and toured extensively in Asia before moving to LA in 2010. He is currently an active session and live musician in LA, and composes and orchestrates music for film, TV, commercials, animation, as well as his own band The Mister J Project. Proficient in numerous styles as a keyboardist, Yuhong excels in R&B, Funk, Electro House, Broadway, and Jazz. Yuhong is also currently faculty in Musicians Institute, where he specializes in contemporary keyboard styles, synthesizers programming and music theory.
Born in Malaysia, Yuhong moved to Singapore under the ASEAN Scholarship Program, and later moved to Los Angeles, where he received his musical education at Musicians Institute (Keyboard Performance) and UCLA (Film Scoring). At MI, he was hired by the school in his third quarter, and began working as a Teaching Assistant in classes ranging from R&B Keyboard, Blues Keyboard, Classidal Theory, to Virtual Instruments and Synthesizers Programming. Musicians and educators who have a significant impact on Yuhong's musicianship include Robert Drasnin, Carl Schroeder, Russell Ferrante, and Otmaro Ruiz.
Yuhong is currently an active session/live player and composer in the LA music scene. He is musical director/resident keyboardist for several LA-based working bands, performing in different venues including The Jimmy Kimmel Stage, The Baked Potato, The Roxy Theatre, Paramount Studios, and House of Blues. He's also in pit orchestras for LA productions of Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals, including Fiddler On The Roof (keyboards/accordian), Jekyll & Hyde (piano/accompanist), Songs For A New World (piano), and Nine (organ/keyboards). Proficient in numerous styles, Yuhong excels at R&B, Funk, Pop, Electro House, and Jazz. He continues working closely with artists based in Asia, and as a composer he is commissioned to compose, arrange, orchestrate, and program music for commercial jingles, independent films, string quartets and wind orchestras in Los Angeles, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
In 2011 Yuhong began leading his own band The Mister J Project, focusing on jazz fusion and R&B/soul arrangements. The band performs regularly in club venues in Los Angeles, and is currently busy recording material and rehearsing for their upcoming West Coast Tour. Yuhong also remains as faculty at MI, where he divides his time across the keyboard, vocal, and bachelor departments. Stay tuned for more exciting material to come!
